Egg Carton Mushroom Decor

I am so into mushrooms right now. The decorative kind, I should add. They are for sure coming into style — which I am equally stoked about as I am bummed. I liked having a quirky little interest. Honestly though, they are a special little accent that I have dreamed up for a special little room we will have in the future. If you know what I mean. Mushrooms are such a cute, natural decor piece that could be both sophisticated & fun. This Egg Carton Mushroom DIY would be so fun to do with kids or yourself for multiple reasons!

This is why I love mushrooms as decorative pieces right now.

They are natural! That is exactly it. I am a neutral fiend. Anything that is an earthy tone is up my alley. Mushroom, however, add a pop of color with still being neutral! They are especially my favorite right now, though, because they will be a fun accent in a room I have dreamed of creating. In time, when we get to do our nursery, we have a very nature friendly theme planned. Acorns, leaves, mushrooms, critters, we want our nursery to reflect our home, our atmosphere. Our neutral & vintage scheme from the rest of our house will flow into this quaint room & the accents of our backyard will fill in the spaces.

Although we live in town, we have acreage behind us. Not owned by us so we pray it stays wooded forever, but it offers so much privacy. The woods bring in squirrels, deer, birds, colorful leaves, wildflowers, mushrooms, so many beautiful & peaceful elements. How fun for our babies to experience the serenity of this home from the inside out. This is just one big, big reason why I am loving mushrooms these days.

How to make Mushrooms out of Egg Cartons.

Step by step instructions even though, again, it is as simple as it seems. This is what I used & did to make these cutie decorations.

shopping list

Paper Mâché Egg Carton, usually used for cage free eggs

Super Glue or Hot Glue

Paint & Paint Brushes

Knife or Scissors

instructions

  1. Cut out the parts of the egg carton that will be used for the mushroom. This will be the bottom portion of the carton. The dips or bowls that the eggs sit in will be the mushroom tops & the points inside will be the mushroom trunks.

  2. Clean up the edges so they are nice clean cuts.

  3. Glue the base of the mushrooms (points) to the inside of the top of the mushrooms (the bowls). Let the glue set.

  4. Paint the mushroom tops however you would like! I used a neutral, rust orange with a soft yellow polka dot. I am loving the deep reds, too!

  5. That is all! Just let them dry & do with them what you please. Keep scrolling for some ideas I have on using these cute mushrooms & how I used ours!

What to do with your Egg Carton Mushrooms.

I had this glass bowl with a lid hanging around the house for a few years. It was a thrift store find, shocker, & has become one of the more fun items I have found! I get to fill it with whatever I like & right now that is mushrooms! I made a terrarium for these cuties using some moss & twinkle lights. There are some other fun things you can do with these though, especially during the holidays!

You can hang your mushrooms like ornaments on your tree. Have a nature themed tree with acorns, mushrooms, critters & stems! You can also string it onto garland with cinnamon, some branch stems, & dried oranges. Anything that is more of a natural element & all of those colors would look so good together! I also thought it would be cute to make little snow globes out of these using the mason jar method like what I shared in this blog post : Mason Jar Snow Globes. Using them as little accents on your presents with gift tags or filling a jar with them of all different colors would be such a simple & festive way to bring nature into your home & also recycling those egg cartons.

I hope mushrooms stay in trend forever. I mean, they are natural so I don’t see why they won’t. Our dreams of filling a nursery with these cuties will be the sweetest day. In the mean time I will cherish these adorable crafts during the holidays as we pray for the day we celebrate it with our growing family.
